As a Staff Software Engineer focused on FinOps at Coinbase, you will be at the intersection of engineering and finance, driving cost efficiency and accountability across our platforms. This role involves a combination of strategic financial planning, vendor management, and technical execution to optimize cloud spending and improve cost visibility. Your efforts will directly contribute to the effective management of cloud resources and financial outcomes. The Coinbase FinOps team is part of the CCOE (Cloud Center of Excellence) and since 2023 worked closely with internal and external stakeholders to optimize rates and usage across Cloud and SaaS providers. Our goal is to continue to build on top of a strong foundation in order to shift left our cost controls and enable best-in-class cloud usage. A strong focus on software engineering allows our team to match other engineering teams in skill. Our focus on FinOps is our specialization. What you'll be doing (ie. job duties): Strategic Leadership and Cost Efficiency: Develop and implement a strategic FinOps roadmap aligned with long-term objectives and industry-standard frameworks. Engage with senior leadership to promote a culture of cost accountability and efficiency. Transition new FinOps practices from an idea through to "Business as Usual" (BAU), ensuring sustainable progress through organizational changes. Unit Economics and KPI Management: Reframe financial strategies to focus on proactive and sustainable cost efficiency. Leverage FinOps "Shift-Left" ideology to deliver granular KPI programs that track and manage unit economics and push cost accountability to product level. Cost Ownership and Visibility: Implement and manage the total cost of ownership model using internal and external tools. Facilitate the tracking and attribution of cloud costs to respective product owners, including developing chargeback models Regularly review cost targets and provide insights to support decision-making for product group leads Vendor Management and Optimization: Drive strategic partnerships with key vendors, influencing roadmaps internally and externally Identify areas for optimization and ensure vendors deliver ongoing improvements. Process Improvement and Financial Reporting: Enhance financial reporting processes to reduce manual efforts and improve accuracy. Collaborate with FP&A, Legal, and Sourcing to streamline purchases and resolve billing disputes. Cloud Architecture Efficiency Establish policies, controls and governance mechanisms to ensure that cloud use aligns with business objectives, complies with regulatory requirements, and optimizes cloud resources efficiently Partner within the engineering organization to ensure solutions are built with cost-awareness and efficiency to maximize business value while achieving performance, scalability, and operational objectives Community Engagement and Talent Development: Represent Coinbase's FinOps achievements in industry conferences and forums.
