What is a sap abap consultant and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
4 min read

Advanced Business Application Programming (ABAP) is a programming language that simplifies the development of business applications. If you become a SAP ABAP consultant, you'll be focused on learning your client's requirements so that you can provide consulting and programming services based on SAP technology.

Some of the consulting services you will provide are generating a knowledge base about the business process and business flow design, educating users on the system, and preparing test scripts for testing configured scenarios.

The consultant also supports the technical team by testing the system's behaviour and supporting design solutions for the gaps identified in the testing. These consultants may also be expected to build a proof of concepts, write technical specifications, and contribute towards finalizing the functional specifications from a technical feasibility perspective.

To become a SAP ABAP consultant, you'll need a Bachelor's degree in computer science and several years of relevant experience working with this software. Technical writing skills may also be preferred.
