each state's favorite music festival

The spring and summer seasons bring flowers, warm weather, and possibly best of all, music festivals. There’s nothing quite like throwing caution to the wind and spending a weekend dancing for hours on end at the elaborate venue of a top-tier music festival.

Woodstock and other similar events ushered in the age of crazy music festivals in the ‘60s. Since then, the love of music festivals has only grown. To the point where almost every single state in America has some form of music festival throughout the year.

Today, the biggest music festivals in the country attract hundreds of thousands of attendees. That got us thinking about what each state’s absolute favorite music festival might be. So, we decided to figure it out for sure.

Most Interesting Findings:

  • Every music festival’s biggest fan was their home state. For example, New Yorkers searched for Governor’s Ball and Electric Zoo more than anyone else. Alternatively, Texans were the most interested in Austin City Limits.

  • Many states preferred festivals that were geographically located near them. For instance, Arizona searched for Coachella more than almost any other state. This goes for Indiana too, where there was a clear interest in Lollapalooza located in the neighboring state of Illinois.

  • Bonnaroo is the most popular with southern states, especially Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, and West Virginia.

  • The east coast states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maine, and New Hampshire searched for Electric Zoo more than any other festival.

  • People all around the country were curious about Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), from Idaho to Alaska.

How We Figured This Out

The first step toward figuring out every state’s favorite festival was creating a list of the top ten biggest music festivals in the United States. We decided to use attendance to determine just how big every festival was.

Here is the list of the top 10 music festivals by attendance in the United States without further ado.

Top 10 Music Festivals in the United States

  1. Austin City Limits – Austin, Texas (450,000)

  2. Summerfest – Milwaukee, Wisconsin (409,000)

  3. Lollapalooza – Chicago, Illinois (385,000)

  4. Coachella – Indio, California (250,000)

  5. Electric Daisy Carnival EDC – Las Vegas, Nevada (230,000)

  6. Voodoo Music + Arts Experience – New Orleans, Louisiana (180,000)

  7. Life is Beautiful – Las Vegas, Nevada (180,000)

  8. The Governor’s Ball Music Festival – New York, New York (150,000)

  9. Electric Zoo – New York, New York (100,000)

  10. Bonnaroo – Manchester, Tennessee (80,000)

Now that we had a list in hand of the country’s most-attended festivals every year, we headed over to Google Trends. Google Trends shows you how much a particular area is searching for a term on Google. So, when we input the search term “Austin City Limits, Music Festival,” Google Trends showed us which states were especially interested (or uninterested) in that event.

For example, when we searched for the term “Bonnaroo” in Google Trends, we found that Tennesee, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia were among the biggest searchers for this particular festival.

We repeated this process for every music festival listed on the top ten list to find every state’s most popular event.
